Last week I wrote about my hubby and face book. In my mind, it opened the door to another post on technology and the family. I am old school. I do not believe that all of this amazing technology is necessarily a good thing...especially when it comes to children.
I am not a fan of television, nintendos, game boys, playstation, x-box, i pods, phones for kids, face book for kids, or heavy computer use.
I am not going to preach about it. Not today, at least.
There are endless studies that I am not going to cite.
I am only going to say this.
When a child is engrossed in the above activities (and they are designed to be engrossing) he is NOT doing these things:
'He is not working in the garage with his father, he is not working in the garden with his mother, he is not doing homework, or reading or collecting stamps. He is not cleaning his room, or washing dishes, or cutting the lawn. He is not listening to a discussion about community politics among his parents and neighbors. He is not playing baseball or going fishing, or painting pictures'.... He is not building forts, exploring the woods, or the seashore, or the back alley. He is not tying knots, or flying kites, or whispering with a friend. He is not turning over rocks, riding his bike, jumping on the trampoline, or sailing a boat. He is not baking, or sewing, or designing an imaginary world. He is not running barefoot. He is not squishing in the mud or damming a creek. He is not hunting for arrowheads. He is not singing. Or dancing. Or wishing. Or stretching and growing. He is not forging relationships. He is not flexing his wings.
He is not working out a solution.
He is not climbing a tree.
He isn't sweaty or tuckered out.
He is not doing the amazing work of being a child.
Please feel free to add to the list....

Amen to all of that! At one point last year we literally put the tv in the closet {we all needed a detox} and I was amazed at what a difference it made in our lives to take that away.
ReplyDeleteBanished the TV from the living room into the out-of-the-way guestroom 6 years ago. Out of sight, out of mind... Our computers have user accounts that have a time limit and no video games! I am lavish (too lavish) with books. We live in Italy and we've already exhausted the small English section at the local library, so used books from amazon arrive about daily.
ReplyDeleteNever met a book I didn't like, nor a reader!
Ivey, this Is SUBSTANCE! Spent the weekend with Nan and we shared your blog among friends at the dinner table...wish you were here, but love durango mom, we must come to colorado soon....you are always welcome to visit us in PoJo!
