"Mom, why can't you just plant things in rows?" he asks.
What he doesn't know, and his 12 year old brain can't yet grasp, is this.
I've spent years ditching the 'row'.
The row is a distant memory. I am a hopeless jumble these days.
Can a vegetable garden be art? It feels that way to me.
The cabbage is nestled into feathers of dill and dainty white cilantro flowers.
The tomatoes are wearing a parsley skirt.
The zucchini and broccoli threaten to take over the world. They have gone forth and multiplied.
We live on the edge of pure mountain wilderness and my garden is not fenced. I have a scare crow that does the job quite well.
"Please get rid of her, Mom! She freaks me out!" they say.
She also freaks the deer, the bear, the birds, the groundhogs, and the squirrels.
She has an eerie look to her. She appears unstable. Perhaps because she's so out of context.
I found her on the side of the road.
She lights up.
I love her.
How does your garden grow?
Living in military housing my "garden" consisted of pots and planters, it has worked well for the past 3 years but now we are moving....I waved goodbye to my beloved "garden" at our moving sale a few weeks ago. One of these days I hope to have an art garden like yours :)
ReplyDeleteI think she is Mrs. Claus! Your garden looks beautiful. I personally think that crops should be planted by their complimentary culinary counterparts! Why not?
