the morning

from here

To say that I like coffee is like saying that I like my children. There aren’t enough words really. And I don’t want to bore you. The purpose of this post is to solicit help, as we have fallen into the coffee making doldrums. We’ve cycled through a french press, an espresso pot, a fancy coffee maker, and right now, a very cheap wal-mart pot. It’s leaving me a little low, but no lower than the aforementioned methods. Any hints, tips, or aha moments around the morning cuppa are welcome and wanted.

I love the picture above. I can almost smell that caffeinated mess!

Help me, please.

{I should say that I’m not capable of extremely anal details like the temperature of my water or the grind of my coffee, so don’t go there.....I am a simple gal who wants a decent cup of coffee without too much hooopla....}

  1. Well, your coffee addiction didn't come from your "first" babysitter. I still don't drink it (at my "advanced age" though I absolutely love the smell of it being ground and brewed!

  2. Too easy and oh so good.... Keurig extra bold varieties... Probably not you... But, heck with the grind... Just plop the K-cup in and enjoy

  3. Im with Leigh! We fell in love with the Keurig but my word is it expensive when two adults are going through at least 6 K-cups a day....ugh! In a perfect world I would order my coffee from here http://www.macyscoffee.net/ and use a really BIG french press. Their coffee is amazing, especially with a little bit of their secret mocha powder added.

  5. I've got just the thing for you! I bought some "frothers" (at IKEA for a wopping $2.95 each). Now I heat my milk for 30 secs in the microwave, froth it up, and poor the coffee in. Yum! It just so happens, I have one extra frother here so I'll bring it to you at school. (On the really tough mornings, I add a little chocolate syrup and froth that with the milk...shhh)

Ko, thanks for letting us know about the magic mocha powder.

  6. A friend gave us a Euro/Bialetti/stovetop thingy years ago--haven't taken the time to learn how to use it--it looks like one "boil over" and you have a royal mess. But... the latest, greatest thing I found yesterday was to add a heaping spoonful of sweetened condensed milk to a really strong cup of joe and voila' ...a White Mocha!!

  7. Pop in a fire jolly rancher and drink it black. Delish for an afternoon cup or nightly treat.

  9. Fine grind coffee, in a plain drip cone. Run the water through with a steady, slow pour. That part is key. Make very strong. So damn good.

  10. French press got me to love coffee, but I think it is really all about finding the kind of coffee you love and if you drink it every day, you can buy the pre-ground. We love the super-roasted french and espresso roasts for their low-acidity and smoothness. If you like the coffee itself, then it should taste fine brewed through a machine too. Some nationally available faves are Seattles' Best #4, Starbucks Italian Roast, and Whole Foods Early Morning Buzz. I bet Durango has some local French roast action too.
I read recently that people who drink coffee are less likely to struggle with depression. Add that to all the other good reasons to enjoy!

  11. Just got a De Longhi "Lattissima" http://www.delonghi.com/corporate_en/products/en-660-r/ that works with Nespresso tabs. You can keep the milk container in the fridge, pop it in and fire away. Choose between "lungo" and "espresso" and around 16 flavors of coffee (meaning coffee, not hazelnut, cinnamon, etc.). I love it. The only drawback is that the milk, while frothy and lovely, is not hot enough. So I pop it in the microwave for 20 seconds before I had the coffee. Love it, and it has me ironically drinking less coffee, and coffee with less milk because the coffee is soooooo good. (think Italian capuccino - GOOD, Starbucks bucket of milk - BAD! Like everything - Italians tend to do good things frequently, but rarely to excess!) The capsules are even recyclable.. Try it!

  12. we loved out chemex until i broke it. now we are back to our standard - french press. i really don't think there is anything better than the super simple ways of making coffee. my favorite part of the morning is lighting the gas stove to heat the kettle of water and with the flame going, i light a morning incense. and using a really great handmade mug. good add ins too - organic cream, honey, maybe some cinnamon nibs brewed in with the coffee.

  13. I loved the french press, and we did the bialetti too, but hubs and I are now permanent soy latte (espresso) drinkers using just an espresso machine. I actually got it about 5 years ago using credit card points I think? Nothing fancy, just a four shot espresso machine with option to steam milk on the side (which we never do). Coffee just doesn't do it for me anymore, but with espresso, we never get tired of it. We heat up our 16oz. soymilk (leaving room at the top for espresso), than add about 2 shots of espresso each. Done. We both look forward to it every morning and if we run out of soymilk, we make a midnight run baby. Nothing gets in the way of our morning soy latte's !! Good luck, your perfect morning drink is out there!

ps. I tried my friend's keurig when I stayed with her for about 4 days. Eh. It was okay, it kind of tasted metallic to me. I couldn't wait to get back to my espresso and soy!!!

  14. After lots of broken glass French presses, we got this for Christmas and it is the best thing ever. http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-1308-16-Columbia-Stainless-Steel-Thermal/dp/B00005YY9X

We get Equal Exchange French Roast and with milk and a humiliating amount of raw sugar, I am wide awake...

  15. thank you all! i am excited! sometimes a change involves a kick in the pants and this is it for me! stacey, i have the insulated bodum and i’m going to pull it out of the ‘camp box’. frothing milk sounds like a plan as does an espresso machine for my birthday! i fear my children would have to forgo a college education if we ventured down the keurig path, but it’s good to know about for special occasions and the chemex actually falls right at the top of my list, if only for it’s lovely design. i ‘gave’ matt one for his birthday in november and it was clearly one of those ‘for you, but actually i’m thinking about myself’ gifts and he opted to return it. so drat. i am renewed and restored....thanx girls!

  18. Ivey, our process is sort of laborious and silly so I'll forego explanation, but I'm just writing in solidarity to say, I hope you find the right system and the coffee doldrums are banished forever.
