always popcorn

What is a weekend without popcorn?
It's the most prolific snack coming out of my kitchen.
I thought everyone knew how to pop popcorn, but a friend texted me the other day and said her husband was craving my popcorn, and she wanted to make it for him and needed the recipe.

Recipe?

For popcorn?

I told her it was just popcorn, with lots of butter and salt and nutritional yeast.
She texted back...
"Fry popcorn in butter?"

No no no no no.
This is where texting falls apart.
I called her, and explained the basics of popping corn, but of course I had no measurements to give.
It's all habit and karma, baby.
I am pleased with myself when there is not one single un-popped kernel left in the pot.

Here's the gist of it.
Put a little oil in your pan
cover the bottom of pan with corn
put on lid and and shake when it really starts popping
when it stops, remove from heat and drizzle with real melted butter (I use almost a whole stick), salt to taste and coat with nutritional yeast.

These days, we are serving popcorn with dandelion smoothies.
My yard is rife with them. Free, easy and so dang good for you.

A friend told me the other day that she was going to start blogging. However, she said, with touch of 'tude, I will never photograph my food.
"That's fine." I said.
I love photographing food, myself.
See the photo below?
Had I not photographed my latest yard blend, it's quite possible that my children would have drink drank drunk that there stick.
I only noticed it when I looked at the camera screen.
I'm sure we've eaten countless sticks, but it might have been the first that we drank.
So there's a good reason to go ahead and document your every move.

These were perfect.

frozen bananas
dandelion
lemon
some yogurt

happy day.

  1. Popcorn is my secret weapon. Kids rowdy, I need a moment - give them a bowl of popcorn. No snack prepared - popcorn. "Popo" was one of Esthers first words, haha.
And do keep on photographing food, what other people eat gives me ideas of my own!

  7. We've been cramming smoothies in wherever possible, too! They taste like summer and pack extra wallops of greens & fruit down our gullets. Popcorn is my secret (not really) vice...nooch is delicious & cheesy, an extra boost of protein...lovely pics Ivey.

  8. Cop Corn is a big hit here as well. I broke down and got an air popper so now almost everyone in the house can make it. Share the wealth right?

Glad to know I'm not the only one shoving weeds (and maybe a few rogue sticks) into my smoothies.

  9. A weekend is not complete without popcorn in our home. Popped in coconut oil, topped with some melted coconut oil, salt and nutritional yeast - the best.

Think I will have to make some tonight :)

  10. I eat popcorn every single day, it's may favorite. I gave it up for Lent this year and almost didn't make it, but I held out. I cook mine in coconut oil and then sprinkle with nutritional yeast, salt and sometimes basil flakes or pepper!

  11. I'm so excited to have another use for nutritional yeast! I only recently purchased it and have used it in this yummy Kale recipe: http://www.yumuniverse.com/2010/07/07/creamy-millet-and-kale-salad/

  14. wow. you and I are cosmically connected. we made chard smoothies this weekend and I popped corn with nutritional yeast (and some of us had green popcorn which is sprinkled with a green spirulina type powder. that would be me and the three year old.)
my popcorn was popped in coconut oil and I guess I didn't put enough oil in as only about 1/2 the kernels popped. SO...YOU WIN!
