this moment....{vision quest...i demand a redo}

I haven't been avoiding the topic. It was just too stupid to for me to completely synthesize.
Here is the abbreviated version.
For those who are just joining us, I decided to go on a vision quest for my 45th birthday.
You can read about my plans here.
It started out nicely. I left the house at about 9:00 am, after a lovely birthday morning celebration. I had a small pack with some essentials and headed out the back door to climb the mountain that I stare at everyday. It was a snarled mess. My clothes were ruined with rips and tears very early on. No biggie, I knew this would be the case. I climbed and climbed and climbed.

At about the point where I took the above picture, overlooking our valley, I was even with circling vultures. It is always special to be up at bird level. I could hear the gentle whoosh of air over their wings as they spiraled very near me.
And then I heard the growling. A deep low growling.
Hhmmm. A mountain lion with a kill? A bear?
My senses were pricked.
Or could it be my mother freaking house cat?
Of course it is.

You've met Percy?
And this is where it gets tricky.
There was NO going back down through the fresh hell that I had just come through.
Do I keep going and sentence the family pet to certain death, or exit stage left?

I knew the running portion would have to wait, but how DO I exit stage left?
My only goal was to find a clear area...where I could see more than three feet in front of me, where I could stop bleeding, and make out a vista that would point me in the right direction.

Finally, it cleared out a bit and was beautiful. I went from visions of perhaps eating my cat, to pre-chewing Luna bars for him. Bastard.
I had my phone for the compact camera, but ended up using it to call Matt.
So. Three and half hours later.
He picked up a wet and muddy house cat
and his scratched and bloody wife about four miles from home.
My last words before I left the house that morning?
DO NOT let the cat out.
I'm pretty sure someone replied....
'Oh, he won't follow you.'

The whole story is amusing and it's in the works, but I'm thinking of a half marathon in the next month or so to make up for this feline fiasco!

Care to join me?
I need a partner.
or I guess I could take the cat.

Please please please go enter the give away
We are loving our Sparkle Stories!!!!

  5. can i tell you how much i love "your mother freaking house cat"? i think that might become my mantra though technically i don't own a mother freaking house cat. i just have this cat that has adopted my porch and my family but that does NOT belong to us. every single time i walk out the door, she's laying there, i have to walk over her, carefully maneuver the steps with baby in arms and cat betwixt legs and then remove her from the car after i get the baby in her seat. she has become a nuisance and i'm not even attempting a vision quest. in my need of said vision quest, i'd probably have thrown the cat under the proverbial bus. you get points for returning her safely home.

  12. Ivey! You are a wild woman! Your cat is a riot and I love this post!! Momma I would join you in a heart beat in Moab! How fun that would be. Something called two littles, a military hubby and living on the Atlantic are keeping me here....Have so much fun and know I'll be running with you in spirit! Off to a soccer game and then a hot and humid afternoon run :) Hope your weekend is going swimingly ;)

  13. You have to be open for a vision quest, take what ever happens...I think the cat was trying to tell you something, it might be that you are a caring person. :) Helen

  14. Percy! It does look super spikey and pokey out there on that mountain.
I think that it is a great idea to go on a vision q. I used to go on them most every day I guess with forest running before the littles.
    Do over!

  15. That is just toooo funny.
I also think that the cat was the one carrying the message. Why else would he follow you all that way? :)

    1. hi dear. they are patagonia. i wish i loved them, but i don't. (and i am a big fan otherwise) they do, however, look very cool. at first they were stiff and heavy feeling and now they feel too wobbly...lost all structure and support, and they aren't that old. but i do beat on them, so who knows. all time favs were my last pair of nike...lunar somethings or other. super light but awesome padding and support.

    2. Thanks for that Ivey. I just bought a pair of Brooks Adrenaline ASR 8 trail shoes and I think I like them. Shoes are such a goofy/personal thing so I'm always asking to see if anyone has something they love. Your shoes are cool looking, like the colors and I'm also wicked hard on my footwear.
