We picked apples the other day. We were planning a trek to a huge free orchard that's a few hours away and a sweet friend said..."or you could come pick them in my yard." So we did.
It was awesome. The single most fascinating thing was the bear poop and I CAN NOT BELIEVE I didn't take pictures. Lewis was blown away.
"Mom, those are just huge mountains of applesauce!"
And they were. Everywhere.
But that's not very appetizing, is it?
We made my favorite apple pie last night and I have a stash of apple vinegar brewing, thanks to Rachel, who made a strong point for how easy it is to make.
Go to her site for photos and more info, but it's really this easy.
Dissolve 1/4 cup sugar in a quart of water and add a few cups of fruit. In this case, apples. Cover with cheesecloth in a jar or grover carafe.
Strain out apples after a week or so and let ferment for a few more weeks.
Mine is already bubbling away.
In other news, we are thinking of forming a family circus.

You always make me smile :) I am in for the topless indoor wine tasting tennis league as long as I can just taste wine.
ReplyDeleteAnd apple vinegar, nice, think I will give that a try with some of our apples.
I may have to go raid the apples off of the neighbors tree. We've dehydrated most of ours and made apple butter. I'm intrigued by apple vinegar.
ReplyDeleteLove all the ideas! We made an "immune tonic" this summer while on a herb-walk with our local health food store using an armful of herbs, a gazillion cloves of garlic, a qt. of apple vinegar and some crazy, organic vodka to preserve it-- Hey, it's right up your alley ;)) 6 weeks later--voila' you have what some people call "Thieves Vinegar". We take this twice a day as needed. It definitely keeps the doctor away and vampires--haha and maybe people in general!

Ha! The last picture is hilarious. So, what would you do with apple vinegar? I'm intrigued. I love the process, and have always been curious when R writes about it. I love how I always feel the fun your family has within each picture. xoxo
ReplyDeleteIvey, if your friend needs any help protecting her apple trees from the bears, just let me know. xo
