fall back

It sure is dark outside right now. It's only 5:30. For one very bright hour the sun shines through my bedroom window. We are losing our sun here, but I won't bore you with the details, I think I've done it for two years in a row now.

This weekend was sink scouring, Della baking cakes, black eyed peas with chili sauce, and a sudden fit of wanting to streamline my life. Piles of laundry do that to me. Why do we need so much?

I cleaned out the kitchen and got rid of the things that I never use, don't like, don't need, have duplicates of, or that irk me a little. Did I need five measuring cups? Or seven mixing bowls? No, ma'am. I have a platter that has sat on my counter for years now. It was a wedding present from a dear friend and I loved it, but it's had a bad crack in it for about a decade. A 'pick it up carefully, because it could fall apart any second' kinda crack. I threw that baby away and it felt so good.  Then I walked around the house and threw away (to the thrift store) everything that irked me.

Hallalujah.

You should try it.

Does it irk you just a little? How good would it feel to never see it again? Never pick it up, clean it, or think about it. Who gives a rat's ass who gave it to you, or what it's worth. Nobody is gonna want it when you die, either.

Lose it, sister.

I hope your week is awesome.

  1. You said it! That is one BIG plus of moving clear across the country and an ocean. I love getting rid of stuff! But, it is overwhelming and exhausting (attempting to tackle all your stuff) so I have to wait till I'm in the right mood, but when the mood strikes, it's feels wonderful!

  2. My thoughts exactly!!! I am a purger, hate having stuff piling up. I usually box it up and leave if for hubby to drop off at the thrift store. It usually doesn't make it that far because he is a pack rat, but at least it sits in the attic of his garage and not in my house :)

    Enjoy your week.

  3. Double tripple quadruple checking that my momma reads this! Ha! Just spent a few days helping her clear out a few boxes in their basement and came home ready to roll up my sleeves and jump into a purge! Thanks for fueling the inspiration lady!

  4. We took a lot of boxes to 'Salvation Army' and others this summer after a move. As I opened a box I kept others handing for pass along, throw out and keep. My husband will tell you I still have a lot of ground to cover, but I am hoping others can get some good out of the things I really don't need even if I want them. Helen

  5. We are losing our light too, the sun struggles to get over the mountain behind our house now. I'm not really a fan of the time change, I don't mind the coming of shorter days but I wish they wouldn't mess with our clocks. How about you?

  6. Love this post!
During Hurricane Sandy we went through what seemed like 100,000 photographs, yes, one hundred thousand! There were 6 U-Haul boxes in the basement calling my name, dating from 1981 to present. I gave myself a serious case of tendonitis from flipping my wrist so fast "dealing" photos into the trash can! I promise I didn't linger too long over anything but I did get a bit ticked though when I saw Ko out of the corner of my eye, tossing WHOLE packets of unopened photos in the trash can--without even looking at them!! Looking back now I'm thrilled that the task is over and the swelling in my hand gone enough that I can zip my own pants again!

  7. accumulating is a major suck - must clean! organize! put away!
i'd rather chuck most of it and feel lighter. i totally get this and go on frequent binges to the point the mr. threatens to glue him and the kids down just to guarantee nobody gets chucked ;-)

  9. I did that exact think two years ago and it felt wonderful. Now, I need to do it again, this time getting rid of even more stuff!

  10. I get what you're saying. It's getting dark here. Like, real dark. I love the light at ten pm in the summer.
I, too, have been decluttering. Who needs six one cup measurers??
