Granne masterminded darling dolls and matching outfits for Della. Grandaddy helped execute.

There are no words for the sadness of this weekend. I'm not even going to try. It's overwhelming to ask why or how or what if. Oh my heart is heavy for those parents and loved ones, the school that was going about the work of educating and nurturing, the first responders who will never again be the same, the small town that was minding it's own business preparing for a joyful holiday.

I found comfort in home and friends and family. I wrapped our first present. A thrift store score for Max that he will wig over. For Della, a thrifted skirt that I am embroidering with a herd of wooly sheep. Our hokey Christmas village always makes me smile. Thanx again, thrift store.  A bald eagle keeps watch 'ore our nativity scene and this makes me happy. The snow kept snowing and found us all shushing down the slopes for the first runs of the season. Saturday night we went to a lovely party and it felt nice to be surrounded by robust families and screaming children. On Sunday we went to Granne and Grandaddy's to celebrate before they leave for California... more joyful hullabaloo with cousins and neighbors and family. The tree got decorated. The sled and shovel got a workout.

I am thankful for all of this.

I send out love and hope and prayers of solace to the whole dang world.

And you.

  2. I agree... Christmas does look good at your house.
Also, I share your bewildered grief... too much, too
unthinkable to comprehend. Thank goodness for the
blessed comfort of *normal* activities, and seeing the
beauty in our time together, enjoying our lives.

  4. Love your photos--we could use a big snow to "blanket" all of us out here--it was a weeping weekend for sure. Yep, a good snow would help everyone to hunker down and stay close. Remembering your post on Advent and the wise words. xoxo

  7. Yes, it was a rough weekend. I took walks alone and just cried a few times.
A crazy balance of not pushing the reality of what happened away and also, enjoying what we have.

  8. Hi Ivey, I just found you from 6512 and Growing blog (which I just found from Farmgil Fare). Looks like we all share the same approximate zipcode! It's awesome to find others who are on similar paths. (though instead of kids in the house, I am facing the empty nest stage of life & planning what crafts and projects to do with my mom who is facing dementia).
I love the idea of revamping thrift store finds and the sheep are too cute on that fabric! What a fun project!
We too have an eagle that comes with the snow and sits in our highest tree watching over things here (like the chicken yard and pomeranians running in and out). Did you see the latest video of an eagle snatching a baby off the ground? Yikes!
Thanks so much for sharing the beauty of your surroundings; the number of eagles here is just amazing! 7 years ago we almost rented a place below a mesa-top like the one you shared here (is it off the 160 West just past the Tech Center?) I don't get out much past the necessary travel in & out of Durango (mostly on purpose, lol). We're about 8 miles East of Home Depot off the 160 going east.
Although I rarely walk the crowded river trail, I often take dogs to the Bayfield park to see the kids on their horses chasing down goats in the arena and the fiber-arts market there. So inspiring to see what others are doing - just so much to see and do around here!
Looking forward to visiting your blog again!
