october challenge

Warning: I want you to join me in a challenge! Run for the hills, if you have no interest in taking a deep breath and focusing for a moment, a month to be exact, on..... yourself. It’s for the greater good, I promise!

I am making an attempt to get ahead of myself. I have decided to take the month of October and very intentionally take care of some things that have been on my mind.  Going into winter is a big transition around here, and I want to be ready. I am going to spend the month of October focusing on three things that will make my winter more pleasant and that will fortify me for the months ahead.

They are:

1. Being as physically fit as possible so that I will be well for the winter. Because of my asthma, a regular cold or flu can go on and on. I want to focus on lung support and stamina and my immune system, in particular. I’m thinking herbal aides, homeopathy, and a cleansing diet with lots of bone broths and cultured foods. Trail running is rocking my world right now, but I want to add yoga to that for so many reasons. What are your weak spots and how can you change that?

2. This might sound petty, but I want to have Christmas ‘done’ by the end of October. There is no budget for this so I’m going to get creative and have fun with it. I have a fantabulous idea that I will share and I will have to implore my extended families to not read. It’s about experiences rather than gifts, and mixes generations for some wild and crazy fun. Part of having it done in October means that November and December won’t be so harried, so this is killing several poor innocent birds with one well-zinged stone. What could you do that would take a load off for the next few months?

3. I need to start and finish several writing projects that have been percolating in my brain for awhile now. I have a completion problem when it comes to my own ideas and these babies have gestated and need to be birthed. I am making a writing schedule and sticking to it, with no agenda but success. Is there anything that you have put on the back burner and need to light afire?

I’m hoping you’ll join me. You can choose one thing rather than three, if it sounds like too much. You can choose 10 things if you’re so inclined. You might just choose to have more intention around the whole idea of self preservation. It might mean a cup of tea to slow your day and recharge. I’m down with that. The only requirement is this. It has to be about YOU.

I’ll try to keep you inspired with updates and ideas.

I spent a good ten years so child focused that I damn near forgot I was here. Loved every minute of it, but balance is good, too.

Take a month. Right now. And give it to yourself in some small way. I’ll try to keep you inspired with updates. Think about it and start on Friday, plan your weekend with yourself in mind. Steal some personal time and join me!  Let me know what you’re thinking! My email is in the sidebar or leave a comment.

Let’s do it!

  1. Oh wow, I wish I had your energy!! I love all three goals but everything is going into upheaval now with the house getting sold. I'm still not sure when we have to leave this house or where we are going!! But, once I know, I think I will need to get on the ball. My goals would be to get this house packed, and furniture sold by December (kind of like #2), to not neglect the kids or hubs in the process :), to keep exercising and stay healthy (like your #1 goal), and to remember that I still have a life too and enjoy my last few months in FL!
    thanks for the inspiration Ivey

  3. Love it! I know what you meant about being so kid focused for the last decade! I too am coming out of my cocoon to pursue a few things that are more about me!

I am not as focused as you are right now, but I am making the goal to walk/run 3 miles a day. I have budding runners, so this is not a real challenge.

My other goal is to enter this season of insane activity with humor and grace. Planning and prioritizing will help me do that.

I look forward to following you and cheering you on! And can not wait to see your holiday idea. We do mainly homemade with family - so you might inspire me!

  4. I am in!
I have Grave's Disease and now that I am going through early menopause it is taking it's toll on my health. I am discovering that getting older is HARD!
My goal is to have Christmas done by December 1. Not sure how this is going to unfold, but I think it's doable.
I am finding I have a lot more time for myself now that the children are getting older. I have the wee one here during the weekday's,but evenings and weekends are mine. I really would like to devote more time to my art. I now have a great studio to work in and just need to get my groove back. With the loss of the Lima Bean I find myself at a stand still. I hope doing this will be the push I need to get my life back into gear!xx

  5. Great idea Ivey! I especially like your Christmas idea about giving experiences instead of gifts. I brought this idea up last year with my extended family but it got shot down in favor of exchanging more superfluous stuff that we all didn't need. Sigh. I have not given up though and will try again this year; can't wait to hear your ideas! I will think on this challenge and come up with a plan. :)

  6. I love your plan for wellness. So important to take care of our own being, and it sounds like you're headed in the right calming direction for it. I'm all sew-sew-sew until Thanksgiving, then a bit of knitting until Christmas. Oh, and that whole school board thing. Like you, I think it's a pretty good idea that I focus on health so I don't get sidelined with a cold. Thanks for the inspiration.

  7. We're on the same wave! October started with a bang and I've scheduled in time to get fit again. I love chasing my grandchildren but need strength for the long haul. I forgot that after 3 days of pain, the muscles remember what to do! Hooray! And the Christmas topic: For the past few Christmas's we've done what we call "Make It-Bake it-Sew it-Grow it". We've had some wonderful and hilarious gift giving--wine corks collected for decades turned into some very cool projects :) And...bread from Bread...lucky you! We love their "Sow Your Oats" cookies! Made my own recipe out here... nailed it :)

    1. Hello! I went to Fort Lewis College in Durango, but have since moved away, and one of the things I miss the most are "Sow Your Oats" cookies from Bread. I've been searching for the recipe, or something like it, but have been unsuccessful. Today while reminiscing about Durango, I Googled 'bread durango recipes sow your oats' and your post here popped up. Would you be willing to share your recipe?
      Thanks!

  8. Ivey, you are more than inspiring...I am having a total knee replacement on Nov 7 and I am using October as prep time for many things but most of all to get my body ready for this dreaded surgery...any suggestions welcome...need to get myself to the Y and stay strong...my body does not tolerate surgery well, and I have to prepare mentally and physically! Will have to get creative with Christmas as well. I'm joining you for Me-tober

  9. I wish I could be that ambitious in my goals. Unfortunately, I'm still a bit overwhelmed with kid stuff, but I'm sure going to try my best!
